Hull, Deck and Transom Core Replacement

A significant number of the projects that we have handled over the years has consisted of restoring older boats to "like new" condition. Some required structural and/or cosmetic upgrades to add value to a boat that an owner was putting up for sale. Most were boats that had been recently purchased at a reasonable price due to the structural and cosmetic deficiencies that were yet to be addressed. One of the more common issues that can be found on older vessels is delamination of the outer skin due to the deterioration of the core caused by exposure to moisture over a long period of time. Replacement of the core and laminate is often required to re-establish the structural integrity of the boat. Core replacement is also sometimes necessary when repairing a newer boat that has been damaged. And replacement of the plywood used in the construction of work decks, bulkheads, or to core the transoms of powerboats is common in older boats as well.

Sample Project 1: This 18' Norton (now manufactured by Eastern Boats) came to us in the spring of 2010. The plywood sections of the boat- the workdeck and it's supporting bulkheads, the cuddy cabin bulkhead, and the steering console- were rotted as was the transom core which was built using three layers of balsa with fiberglass between the layers. The boat had so perfectly fit the owners needs over the years that he chose to rebuild the known quantity that he had rather than purchasing a newer boat that may or may not perform as well. We removed the inner skin of the transom and the layers of damaged core and replaced it with four layers of 12mm Meranti marine plywood. The workdeck, cuddy bulkhead, and steering console were replaced using an exterior grade plywood and all exposed plywood surfaces were laminated using vinylester resin (a cross between epoxy and polyester resin). The interior areas were then painted using Interlux Brightsides Polyurethane, new transom scuppers- bronze rubstrakes- and PVC spray-rails installed, the bottom painted, and the pot hauler davit re-installed to complete the work.

18' Norton - Here is the transom with the inner skin and balsa core removed. The areas where the two scuppers were located, the outboard was hung, and along the top edge of the transom show that the core had rotted leaving the blackened surface behind. 18' Norton - The workdeck and cuddy bulkhead have been replaced and glassed over and the transom rebuilt. The interior is ready for primer and paint and the exterior of the transom will be sprayed using a one part urethane that matches the original gelcoat color. 18' Norton - The steering console hung in place, the pot hauler davit mounted to the rebuilt cuddy bulkhead, and the interior painted.
