Hull, Deck, and Interior Painting Systems

The deciding factors as to which paint system to use vary greatly from boat to boat as well being particular to each area of the boat. All factors need to be considered. Such as: the condition of the substrate surface- is it gelcoat, wood, or metal?; was it previously painted?, and if previously painted- was a one part or two part paint used and what is it's condition?; what conditions will the new paint be exposed to?- UV exposure, water and oil in the bilge, heavy foot traffic, etc. We have extensive experience using a wide variety of paint products on a wide variety of surfaces. Whether it be two part paints such as Awlgrip, Imron, or Sterling- one part polyurethanes such as Brightsides, Interdeck, or Easypoxy- acrylic polymers like KiwiGrip- or any of the alkyd enamels from Interlux and Pettit- we can advise you on what paint system will be right for your boat.

Sample Project 1: The boat pictured here is a 26' Pearson that we had in our shop on a couple of occasions. The first time- in early 2002- we took a number of steps to restore the boat to "like new" condition. The non-skid had been previously painted and in decent condition but the glossy gelcoat surfaces on deck were in rough shape. We repaired any defects we found, primed it with Awlgrip epoxy primer, and hand brushed the final Awlgrip topcoat. Structurally- the solid glass hull under the cockpit area had a tendency to "oilcan" or push in while being held up on jack stands. We moved the stands to return it to it's original shape and glassed sections of PVC foam core to the interior surface to stiffen the area. We stripped and varnished all the woodwork on deck, installed several pieces of new deck hardware, improved the cabin ventilation by installing a new dorade cowl on deck and a solar ventilator through the forward cabin hatch, and we painted out the engine well and cockpit lockers using Pettit DuraWhite (now Ez-Cabin-Coat) a water based paint formulated for high moisture areas. In 2004 we had the boat back again to re-do the non-skid using Interlux Interdeck.

26' Pearson - The glossy areas on deck have been taped off and a blue die coat is being used to help in the sanding process before the primer is applied. 26' Pearson - The finished product with the brushed Awlgrip topcoat, the wood refinished, and the new dorade cowl and solar vent shown. 26' Pearson - The aft deck and engine well shown with the well and cover painted, new deck hardware, and a new gasket on the engine well lip.
Sample Project 2: The second boat shown is a 32' Pearson Vanguard which had been sitting at a storage facility just down the road from us for a few years. The new owner had been looking country wide for this model boat before purchasing this particular one. Structurally it was solid. But cosmetically it was a nightmare. The woodwork was in need of being stripped and refinished. And the topsides had been paint with some sort of very hard paint whose primer had failed leading to heavy blistering over much of the surface. We stripped the woodwork and restored it using Sikkens Cetol Marine Wood Finish. The sandblasting companies that we talked to wouldn't touch the job so we were forced to heavily abrade the surface to remove the old paint. We then faired the surface using Awlgrip epoxy primers and fillers and used Awlgrip Polyester Urethane for the topsides and boot stripe. The boat was then shipped to it's new home in the New Orleans area.

32' Vanguard - The deck has been covered and the process of removing the blistered paint has begun. 32' Vanguard - Shows the finish Awlgrip epoxy primer- applied after fairing the surface with Awlgrip High Build primers and fillers. 32' Vanguard - The Awlgrip topcoat has been sprayed and we are laying out the waterline and boot stripe using a laser level.

32' Vanguard - "Stardust" loaded on Independent Boat Haulers trailer- on it's way to a local marina who will use their travelift to load the boat onto a long haul trucker's trailer. 32' Vanguard - "Stardust" waiting to be loaded at Great Bay Marine. 32' Vanguard - "Stardust" at berth in Louisiana.
Sample Project 3 The third boat is a J 24 that we also had in our shop on a couple of occasions. When the boat first came here in 2011 the owner had stripped it of all of it's hardware and had done some initial repairs and filling on deck. We finished the prep work to the deck and topsides and sprayed the topsides and entire deck with Awlgrip primer. Awlgrip topcoat was then sprayed on the topsides and all glossy areas on deck. The owner then assisted us in applying the new non-skid using KiwiGrip (tinted to match the Awlgrip color). In 2012 we worked with the owner to install the bow and stern rails, new toe rails, and mostly all new deck hardware. He also had us seal off the bulkheads forward of the cockpit and cockpit locker seats as well as constructing a new v-berth section that was sealed with fiberglass to provide enough positive buoyancy to keep the boat from sinking (photos of that process can be seen on the Custom "One-Off" Fabrication page).

J 24 - This is how it arrived at our shop with the owner having done a fair bit of filling of old holes and cut-outs. J 24 - The glossy areas have been sprayed with Awlgrip topcoat, the non-skid rolled with KiwiGrip, and several pieces of new hardware installed. J 24 - The owner taking his boat home. It would soon be in the water for the first time in years.
